Ask and You Shall Receive

What you don’t know CAN hurt you, and frequently does when requirements are missed.
Expert Roxanne Miller reveals proven techniques for asking the RIGHT questions of the right
people based on the Zachman Framework, which is explained in her book The Quest for
Software Requirements.
The assumption being made here is that if you ask more of the right questions (to the
right people), you’re more likely to elicit all the requirements. Furthermore, eliciting all the
requirements increases the probability of successful project outcomes—delivering the right
solution on time and within budget.

Morning Sessions

Session A:
Paula Pace
25-Piece Puzzle (communication skills, leadership communication)

Too often we hesitate to embrace opportunity. We see it as too much work or as having too
many pieces that need to be assembled in order to achieve success. However if we have the
right combination of skills, we can embrace opportunity and turn a thousand piece headache
into a simple, 25-piece puzzle.

Session B:
Terry Wiegmann
Just How Fast is "Fast"?

Whether you call them Non-Functional Requirements, Quality of Service Requirements
(QoSRs), Supplemental Requirements or simply the "ilities", QoSRs need love, too. Specifying
and handling QoSRs has always been challenging and agile's focus on User Stories
and iterations make it feel like fitting square pegs in round holes! In this session, we will
discuss a couple models and approaches to QoSRs, and will also share some sample QoS
measurements and specifications.

Afternoon Sessions
Kent McDonald
What Questions Do You Want To Answer? Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence
Analysis

"My users are asking for a report, but how do I make sure I truly understand their needs and
properly convey that to the rest of the delivery team?" This is a common question raised by
Business Analysts working on data warehouse and business intelligence projects. This session
shows how to work with your stakeholders to develop useful requirements for data warehouse
and business intelligence projects. The session demonstrates how to understand a user's
business intelligence needs by starting with the questions they want to answer and build clear,
concise, and meaningful requirements that the delivery team can use to establish the data
structures, data loads and views into the data that satisfy inquiring minds. Along the way, we'll
demonstrate techniques for helping stakeholders clarify their information needs and how to
handle the common stakeholder request to see all the data because "we may want to organize
our data by that information…. Some day."

Session A:
Roxanne Miller
Handling Problem People? No Problem!

When two or more persons are gathered, the probability for conflicts to arise is nearly
100 percent. However, you do not have to be a miracle worker to help people work
together. Applying the skills of a good Facilitator can help the business analyst overcome
situations that are potentially disastrous to requirements-gathering workshops. An effective
team works according to the “Golden Rule” -- treat others as you’d want them to treat
you. Recognized expert, Roxanne Miller focuses specifically on group dynamics and “problem
people” characteristics, and provides suggestions for handling sticky situations. Roxanne
reveals a repeatable, progressive "Be-Nice-to-Not-So-Nice" approach to intervene and stop
individual or group behaviour characteristics. Don't come in late, leave early, chat in side
conversations, be too quiet, or be a loudmouth! Roxanne delivers an audience-interactive
presentation and you just might be the 'butt' of her jokes.

Session B:
Deb Jacobs
Requirements Engineering…So Things Don’t Get Ugly

This session is based on a couple of well-received articles published in Crosstalk over the last
couple of years, Requirements Engineering So Things Don’t Get Ugly (October 2004) and
Interpreting Requirements in a He Said She Said World (December 2006). For further details
these articles can be made available or accessed at http://www.stsc.hill.af.mil. This tutorial is
intended to be an extension of these articles and presentations on this topic given at several
conferences including Infotec Conference in Omaha, Systems and Software Technology
Conference (STSC) in Salt Lake City, the PSQT in Minneapolis, and the QAI conference in
Orlando where it received the highest ratings from attendees.
